Why is My Car A/C Blowing Hot Air?
posted on

On those hot and humid summer days, the refreshing breeze of a car’s air conditioning is always a welcome relief. However, if you switch on your A/C only to be met with warm, stale air, a trip to your local auto repair shop is sure to be the only thing on your mind.
For an air conditioning system to work perfectly, it needs to cool, dehumidify, and circulate the air inside your vehicle. The system itself is a complex orchestra of tubes, wires and tanks, and if one part fails, the whole thing can go down.
If you are struggling to keep your car chilled, four main culprits could be behind your cooling troubles.
Low Refrigerant
Low refrigerant could be at fault for your cooling woes, as the refrigerant is one the most crucial elements in the cooling process. While some is lost gradually over time — usually years — refrigerant can also leak out of old hoses, loose tubing connections, and weak seals.
Age and Moisture
Most of the air conditioning system is made of metal parts, but the rest is made of rubber, which degrades faster due to heat and moisture. If the moisture enters the lines, it can travel into the refrigerant tank where they mix and turn into a type of acid, leading to further damage.
Electrical Issues
Your car A/C is made up of a complex system of electrical wires and sensors. If one part of the electrical system fails, it is designed to shut itself down to prevent further damage or potential harm to your repair technician. A bad sensor could also lead to a shut down even though a larger problem doesn’t exist.
Blocked or Broken Compressor
The compressor is one of the other most important parts of the air conditioning system; it’s what is responsible for pressurizing the A/C system and keeping the cooled refrigerant flowing. The compressor is located in the front end of the car, so it is potentially at risk for impacts with road debris like sticks and rocks. The compressor can also become blocked by items caught between it and the car’s grill.
For a car’s air conditioning system to work its best,
careful maintenance
is a must. Whether it’s low refrigerant, moisture, faults in the electrical system, or a blocked or broken compressor, don’t let A/C troubles keep you stuck in the heat. Let the friendly, helpful mechanics at RJM Auto Repair & Tire in Olympia, WA help you keep your cool. Call or
